IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Ottawa. April 28, 2016) – As a result of budget cuts announced by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, 54 public library branches in the province will be closed.

This is devastating for the people of the province.

Public libraries are part of the essential social and economic infrastructure for strong communities. Public libraries provide the resources and the capacity that allow communities to flourish.
The Canadian Library Association believes that public libraries are even more important in challenging times. Closing libraries closes opportunity.

The Canadian Library Association urges the government of Newfoundland and Labrador to reconsider its decision and recognize that investing in public libraries is an investment in the potential of the people of the province.
